<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8MOrvJjuKyc/XIwzqXSViLI/AAAAAAAAFa4/CBBW9g_Jwho3oPlhN20iOIu0QtYRjE5CwCLcBGAs/s1600/zoombies-2-movie-poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="584" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8MOrvJjuKyc/XIwzqXSViLI/AAAAAAAAFa4/CBBW9g_Jwho3oPlhN20iOIu0QtYRjE5CwCLcBGAs/s400/zoombies-2-movie-poster.jpg" width="291" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Zombie animals rise up yet again in a new animal preserve, threatening those who work there, and the world!</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>REVIEW:</b> The<a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2016/04/zoombies-2016.html"> first Zoombies</a> is one of my personal favorite Asylum movies,
right behind <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2013/05/age-of-dinosaurs-2013.html">Age of Dinosaurs</a>, <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/06/triassic-world-2018.html">Triassic World</a>, and <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/10/review-6-headed-shark-attack-2018.html">6-Headed Shark Attack</a>, so suffice to say I was pretty excited when Asylum sent me a
screener copy of Zoombies 2 to review, which up until about a week ago I
didn't even know was coming out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QY0nKLo7EIA/XIw08Lj5teI/AAAAAAAAFbE/ObqKqyqEFrsdCWDWJpW0GQAjgNb25ru_wCLcBGAs/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QY0nKLo7EIA/XIw08Lj5teI/AAAAAAAAFbE/ObqKqyqEFrsdCWDWJpW0GQAjgNb25ru_wCLcBGAs/s400/maxresdefault.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the most
part, this movie is entirely stand alone from the first movie, save for one short scene towards the end that ties it directly in (I won't spoil that scene here, but it was definitely an unexpected and fun one). This movie takes place at a entirely
different animal preserve from the first, and deals with poachers that break in to
hunt the animals, except one of the poison darts they use isn't poison
but the formula discovered in the first movie, unleashing the animal
zombie virus upon this place, causing the surviving poachers and park
staff to have to work together to survive this new killer animal
outbreak.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The characters are pretty fun here, with some genuinely funny moments and performances, although I'll need to watch the movie a couple more times to see if they end up being as memorable as the characters in the first movie. The CGI for the killer animal attacks are
about on par with the first movie - some shots are pretty decent but
most are below what you would expect from a modern Asylum movie, however
that's also understandable as there's quite a lot of CG effects work
that needs to go into a movie like this, and what they're attempting to
do in those scenes are just, like the first movie, downright fun, and the fun level is what I look for most in these types of movies (such as a scene with a crocodile bursting out of a toilet, or the hippo attack on the river, or when the characters swing a bat to knock a raging porcupine out of a window, or even just some of the dialogue exchanges, there's pretty much a level of insane fun in every scene). Also, to it's credit, none of the bad CG moments are as visually-horrible
as the zip-lining scene and elephant-riding scene from the first movie.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QmVnPz3LwJQ/XIw1pNvh0KI/AAAAAAAAFbM/66EXP6kt1u4ZziH3FGTxpjYudAegoSDTgCLcBGAs/s1600/Zoombies-2-Film.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QmVnPz3LwJQ/XIw1pNvh0KI/AAAAAAAAFbM/66EXP6kt1u4ZziH3FGTxpjYudAegoSDTgCLcBGAs/s400/Zoombies-2-Film.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
Also along those lines of fun, we get to see some familiar 'zombie' animals
back, like the monkeys, hippos, and rhinos, but we also get tons of new
ones like meerkats, snakes, crocodiles, and my personal favorite of the movie - the killer
porcupines that can shoot their quills as projectiles! The killer wild animal
attack scenes in this movie are just totally...<i>well</i>...wild (haha)! Although it is sadly missing a big recurring 'main' threat to latch onto and get excited about every time it pops on screen, like Kifo the Gorilla from the first movie.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
While
Zoombies 2 doesn't offer much different or new from the original 2015
movie, and it's pretty much just more of the same, I loved that original
movie so I'm actually content to get more of the same, as it's more of
the same of what I love! If, like me, you loved the first movie than
there's plenty for you to enjoy with Zoombies 2 as well, even if the
overall package is no longer quite as new or unique as the
first. Despite that, it still oozes wild insane fun from beginning to end, and, as
I said above and always saying in other reviews, the #1 top thing I
look for in B-Movies such as this, above all else, is the level of
cheesy fun on display.<br />

<b>The Leprechaun from the original movie returns when a group of sorority girls unwillingly
awakens him when they begin renovations on the farm house.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>REVIEW:</b> <span title="Edited">I was weary of Leprechaun Returns upon the
initial trailer. After all, Warwick Davis, the actor who played the
Leprechaun in every other movie (minus the 100% unrelated Leprechaun Origins) was not returning for this one (although<a href="https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3536177/warwick-davis-isnt-starring-leprechaun-returns-warwick-daviss-words/"> his reasoning</a> is totally understandable) and on
top of that it was being made by the SyFy Channel, and although I love their cheesy summer B-Movies, they aren't exactly who I think of when I think of resurrecting a beloved horror franchise and having it be worth it (their Pumpkinhead sequels, anyone? <i>Urgh</i>).<br /><br />However, I really had nothing to
worry about as this turned out to easily be one of the best entries in the series, if
not <i>the</i> best. Leprechaun has always been a franchise where the idea
itself was better than any of the actual movies. The first movie is so-so at
best, with Leprechaun 2 and 3 being the only truly good ones, then everything after that
is just absolute shit.</span><br />

<br />
<span title="Edited">This is the first sequel in the series that acts as a
direct sequel to a previous movie, as each of the other ones are 100% entirely unrelated and stand-alone, minus the use of Warwick Davis as the Leprechaun in them. This one however picks up from where
the first movie left off and revives that Leprechaun to terrorize a new
generation of teens, one of which is the teen daughter of Jennifer Aniston’s
character from the first movie.<br /><br />The first chunk of the movie is a bit slow,
but that's only because the movie actually takes the time to let us get to know these characters, to the point where we actually enjoy all of them, even the more eye-rolling annoying ones. Once the Leprechaun finally makes himself known to everyone though, and
starts terrorizing them, the movie is a nonstop fun gory ride till the end. </span><br />
<br />
<span title="Edited">The acting is pretty good, the kills vicious and gory, and the
Leprechaun himself both funny and deadly. I do wish Warwick Davis had
returned though, but the new actor does a commendable enough effort to
replace him, and the fact that he looks different here actually gets mentioned during the movie by the Leprechaun himself.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c_i9pNWwC50/XIl5ByVx9FI/AAAAAAAAFac/m69QmLDrhZsYpmvT2Y3Pt0T-ZUjAWf0wgCLcBGAs/s1600/leprechaun-returns-still-image-56546.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="363" data-original-width="545" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c_i9pNWwC50/XIl5ByVx9FI/AAAAAAAAFac/m69QmLDrhZsYpmvT2Y3Pt0T-ZUjAWf0wgCLcBGAs/s400/leprechaun-returns-still-image-56546.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span title="Edited">I also loved how this movie brought back many traits and quirks of the Leprechaun introduced in that first movie that was mostly ignored in the sequels, such as his love of shoes and his hilarious obsession of keeping shoes clean, no matter what else is going on around him, or using his voice to make himself sound like other people to trick his would-be victims. Even though the character is played by a different actor, the writing for him was spot on with emulating how that character was in the original first movie.</span><br />
<br />
<span title="Edited">There are some things I felt the movie could have done without however, as I felt it kind of distracts from the terror that it had built up, up to those points, such as one character that dies early on constantly returning as a ghost to help our main lead throughout the movie (also ruins the impact of this character's death by doing that as well), and I HATED this movie's explanation for where Jennifer Aniston's character is now. I mean, I understand they can't get that actress back, but they could have had a better explanation for what happened to her. Or hell, just recast. They did it for the Leprechaun, and when last we saw Aniston's character she was a teenager so it wouldn't exactly be TOO jarring to get another actor to play her as an adult, granted that she at least looks somewhat similar.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Q7fdzIA_gw/XIl62CQPrnI/AAAAAAAAFas/0uXs9et9mFIuQDfzceNCa-I-htZ4y8zSwCLcBGAs/s1600/Leprechan-Returns-2018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="627" data-original-width="1200" height="208" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Q7fdzIA_gw/XIl62CQPrnI/AAAAAAAAFas/0uXs9et9mFIuQDfzceNCa-I-htZ4y8zSwCLcBGAs/s400/Leprechan-Returns-2018.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span title="Edited">Those issues aside though, this movie surprised the hell out of me and I loved almost every minute of it from beginning to end. I'm hoping SyFy makes further sequels to this, as I'd love to see what they cook up next for this little Leprechaun.</span><br />

<b>A group of scientists at a research facility based on Antarctica battle a breed of sharks that have invaded Antarctic waters.
<br />
<br />
REVIEW:</b> <span title="Edited">Ice Sharks, from 2016, is another of the more really fun 'The Asylum' movies, and one of the rare ones I hadn't seen before, so it was a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed it as much as I did and had me questioning myself on how I could have gone so long without checking it out.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDe3_BFL350/XIxYUd3eg6I/AAAAAAAAFbk/aI1nrQQPZjo1opVRjpoD73aCYJuieNB1ACLcBGAs/s1600/9Bz-AWQ97d8.maxresdefault.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="405" data-original-width="720" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDe3_BFL350/XIxYUd3eg6I/AAAAAAAAFbk/aI1nrQQPZjo1opVRjpoD73aCYJuieNB1ACLcBGAs/s400/9Bz-AWQ97d8.maxresdefault.webp" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span title="Edited">I
loved that the action took place out in the middle of the arctic on a
sinking research platform, it was a nice change from the usual ‘summer
coastal town’ setting that most of these types of movies are set at, and
even though the CGI was spotty in a few places, that’s to be expected
from The Asylum. What surprised me is that the CGI actually looked
pretty damn decent a lot of the time other than those few moments.<br /><br />It
also included a really good pace filled with lots of different and fun
(also occasionally gory!) attack and chase scenes, never feeling
repetitive which is a slump that quite a lot of killer shark movies fall into.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KypWXJ4sqoI/XIxY9n85-aI/AAAAAAAAFbs/0DMUySrwXQ4gMg4GapX83ujgGCEeg3JqgCLcBGAs/s1600/ice-sharks-2016-action-horror-movie-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="252" data-original-width="468" height="215" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KypWXJ4sqoI/XIxY9n85-aI/AAAAAAAAFbs/0DMUySrwXQ4gMg4GapX83ujgGCEeg3JqgCLcBGAs/s400/ice-sharks-2016-action-horror-movie-3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span title="Edited">My only issue with this one, speaking as an Asylum
fanboy anyway, is with the characters. They were all acted well but I
felt not enough was done with the characterization. Pretty much all of
them, including the main ones, felt quite plain, forgettable, and
interchangeable from one another. </span><br />
<br />
<span title="Edited">That aside however, Ice Sharks managed to be one hell of a good time, and speaking as someone that watches <i>a lot</i> of these movies, this one did everything else just right, and managed to still feel fresh despite being the hundredth or so killer shark movie made by The Asylum and the SyFy Channel.</span><br />

<b>Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms, and must use their wits to survive each one.<br />
<br />
REVIEW: </b><span>I had very little interest in Escape Room to begin with, just
based off the fact that it was a PG-13 horror movie, being released in
the movie death grounds of January, and the trailer did nothing at all
for me.</span><br />
<br />
<span></span><span>Well, to my surprise it actually turned out pretty decent. I mean
most everything about it was pretty paint by numbers, sure. It was
obvious which characters would survive and which wouldn't, it was
obvious who would turn against the rest, it was even mostly obvious what
order each of them would die in. Yet, the movie was still surprisingly
entertaining. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S07HoRkplqs/XIzVCvWzD8I/AAAAAAAAFcE/9c_YrbAemjcKRpABn0cwuL6koGAnsOOaACLcBGAs/s1600/escape_room-publicity_still_6-h_2019_0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S07HoRkplqs/XIzVCvWzD8I/AAAAAAAAFcE/9c_YrbAemjcKRpABn0cwuL6koGAnsOOaACLcBGAs/s400/escape_room-publicity_still_6-h_2019_0.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span>Each of the characters remained interesting and were all
acted quite well, and each of the trap rooms were visually interesting
and unique from one another (the upside down pool bar was my personal
favorite), and it was actually fun trying to figure out the clues to
each escape room right alongside the characters.</span><br />
<br />
<span><span>Yeah, sure, the movie is horribly predictable but sometimes I'm not
looking for high art and to be wowed away, I'm just in the mood for
something that I can pass an hour and a half with and be entertained and
this movie did exactly that. It would probably get an even higher score from me
if it had managed to be R-Rated and gory, and if the epilogue ending
didn't drag on for way too long. </span></span><br />

<span>Well how times have changed. I decided to revisit this
one recently for the first time since high school, since it was on
Amazon Prime Video, and <i>boy oh boy</i>, was it a rough viewing. </span><br />
<br />
<span>The acting was
atrocious, even by the low bar of standards for these types of movies, and the
characters were all annoyingly horrible people - There isn't one single
character that was enjoyable to watch here or that you feel you could root for, which just makes it all the
more frustrating when it takes forever for the giant mutant killer
spiders to start attacking and you have to spend so much downtime with all these unlikable characters.<br /> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9TWWo5AURmM/XIzaNhHG9II/AAAAAAAAFcg/yiPEBRXEzH4ui4CZUmxRzTzb4H7P8qFuQCLcBGAs/s1600/arachnia1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="320" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9TWWo5AURmM/XIzaNhHG9II/AAAAAAAAFcg/yiPEBRXEzH4ui4CZUmxRzTzb4H7P8qFuQCLcBGAs/s400/arachnia1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span>It's not all horrible though. The
death scenes, at least the ones that aren't annoyingly off-screen, are pretty
enjoyable and gory, and the most interesting thing about this movie is the use of
oldschool claymation stop motion effects for the mutant spiders and their
attack scenes. I mean sure, it doesn't mesh well at all with the actual
real live-action stuff, but at least it's something different from the
norm and I can appreciate the attempt and the effort that went into
that. It's certainly more interesting and visually-pleasing than the
really bad early-2000s TV budget CGI that plagued a lot of these types
of movies.</span><br />

<br />
REVIEW:</b> As a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (and to a lesser
degree At Worlds' End), to say I was excited for Slaughterhouse Rulez, a brand new horror
comedy that has both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in it, would be an
understatement. <br />
<br />

<br />
Sadly, both of them only play minor roles (and both of which
are annoyingly unfunny roles) and they don't even end up sharing any
screentme together, minus one 20-second moment. To make matters worse, the director is clearly
trying to go for that specific Edgar Wright-style of comedy and tone throughout
the movie but constantly fails on almost every level. I failed to laugh
once and I chuckled maybe twice during the entire affair.<br />
<br />
Add to that, we get TONS of unneeded backstory and information on the
school this takes place at and several of the characters residing there, and this is all information
that you would think would end up coming into play in some big important
way during the movie due to how much these things keep getting brought
up... except they don't. Not in any real meaningful way anyway. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soaJGF8DJzc/XIzptAtZlII/AAAAAAAAFdg/6OzihM6D07kXZ7bbv8UuQEpz-0Ix2vMVACLcBGAs/s1600/rulez.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="586" data-original-width="1232" height="190" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soaJGF8DJzc/XIzptAtZlII/AAAAAAAAFdg/6OzihM6D07kXZ7bbv8UuQEpz-0Ix2vMVACLcBGAs/s400/rulez.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Which
leads me to my biggest issue - Almost nothing happens in this movie. The
underground creatures don't show up until about 20 minutes from the end
of the movie and very, very, little of the movie up to that point has
anything to do with them or the mystery surrounding them, which is made
worse by the unfunny attempts at humor throughout and the fact that
absolutely no character here is likeable.<br />
<br />
Sure, the creatures
themselves look fantastic (what we get to see of them, they don't show
up til late in the movie and then they're mostly obscured by darkness)
and the gore, when we <i>finally</i> get it, is insane and awesome, and
everything is done with practical effects which I appreciate all the
more, but at that point in the movie it's far too little, far too late.<br />

<b>As mass of solar storms causes tsunamis, volcanoes, and flooding, a
city-dwelling family attempts to flee to the relative safety of a group
of high-elevation caves several miles away. </b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> There's two things that Asylum pumps out faster than you can blink - mockbusters and Natural Disaster movies, with the generically-titled End of the World being the latest of the latter.<br />
<br />
If you've seen one Asylum-made Natural Disaster movie you've pretty much seen them all, as they're all essentially the exact same movie just with different actors and a few minor details different - a family that doesn't quite all get along, of which one member is a scientist warning about the impending disaster with nobody listening to them, have to make their way through destroyed cities to reunite with one another, with disasters happening every few minutes, and then eventually get to a safe zone. They are pretty much all literally the exact same.<br />
<br />
Luckily this is one of the ones with better acting than average for an Asylum movie, decent level of special effects for this kind of fare, and fun scenes of destruction that hardly slows down. Some of these, for some reason, have very little actual scenes of destruction, which makes no sense to me as that's the exact reason that you watch Natural Disaster movies. But luckily this is one that gives us plenty of that, with likeable and well-acted characters to follow during the down time between said scenes of destruction.<br />
<br />
End of the World is nothing new at all for those like me that watch all these types of movies that Asylum puts out. But even though there's nothing new, the stuff it does do is done quite well, which puts this one near the top of the list for me for Asylum-made disaster movies. Unfortunately, it also makes reviewing it pretty difficult since it feels like I've already reviewed this movie umpteen times over. Still, as long as Asylum keeps making them, I'll keep watching them. Even with the movies essentially being carbon copies of one another, as long as the actors are decent and the scenes of destruction and survival are fun than I'll still enjoy my time watching them.<br />

<b>An alien race, intent on decimating mankind and repopulating the Earth,
brainwashes humans to carry out acts of destruction. With the military
powerless, humanity's only hope lies in an untested, hi-tech mech-bot.</b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> Hornet is an upcoming movie by The Asylum due out on December 18th, obviously made to be a mockbuster on the Transformers: Bumblebee movie. Amazon Prime Video in Canada has been releasing almost the entire Asylum catalog on their service bit by bit over the last week (so, pretty much early Christmas to someone like me!) and among the ones uploaded, much to my surprise, was an early release for Hornet!<br />
<br />
The plot is simple enough, although a tad bit unbelievable (then again, which Asylum movie isn't? Hahaha). When aliens invade the Earth and start brainwashing people into a mindless rage zombie-like state, it's up to a group of University students to use their secret project - a fully-working semi-self-conscious giant robot called Hornet - to help save the day.<br />
<br />
What I found interesting about this however, is that the movie is actually done in Found Footage style. Now, call me crazy, but out of all the types of movies that would fit that treatment, I never in a million years expected a giant robot movie to be one, but honestly? It works. After the initial jarring of discovering it was Found Footage style I slipped right into that mode and had no problem with it, and unlike most Found Footage movies, the way that this is shot makes it pretty easy to even forget that it;s in that style most of the time. Plus I can always appreciate thinking outside the box, and making a giant robot vs alien invasion movie found footage is definitely thinking outside of said box.<br />
<br />
The robot himself actually looked pretty decent most of the time, for a movie such as this, and he had some pretty genuinely funny moments throughout, even during otherwise serious intense scenes, so it was pretty easy to instantly like this robotic character. Unfortunately, he doesn't really have much to do for most of the movie. The majority of his screentime he's just standing around in the background or being one of the sources of camera footage, and occasionally offering a dry humor line of dialogue here and there. Don't get me wrong, the movie is far from boring, there's always something happening from alien ships flying around, mind-controlled rage 'zombies' attacking in some pretty intense scenes, and flash forwards to our group of characters being interrogated by a secret Government organization that included some truly suspenseful moments. However, while all of that stuff was interesting, and actually done rather well more often than not...it's not really what I'm looking for with this movie. I'm looking for giant robot action, of which, while there is some, especially during the last 20 minutes where the robot action comes out in full force, there is not nearly as much as you would think, considering the cover art and plot.<br />
<br />
As far as Asylum productions go, Hornet is quite competently made; The robot itself is likeable, the acting from everyone is actually great, the special effects (most of the time) are passable, there's genuine moments of humor and genuine moments of tension, and there's never a dull moment or lull during the entire runtime of the movie with there almost always being something happening to the characters. However, as stated above, the one big issue this movie does have is that there's very very little actual giant robot action until the last 20 minutes of the movie, and very little for the giant robot to actually do during the rest of that time which was a little disappointing, especially considering just how good everything else about this one was.<br />

<b>Fans flock to a festival celebrating the most iconic horror movies, only

diabolical agenda. As festival attendees start dying off, three
teenagers - more schooled in horror-film cliches than practical
knowledge about neutralizing psycho killers - must band together and
battle through various madmen and monstrosities to survive.</b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> Blood Fest is a new horror movie brought to us by Rooster Teeth of
Red vs Blue fame, that follows a group of friends that attend a horror
convention, only to have the entire thing be a trap set by a madman to
kill as many people as possible in as many different horror settings as
possible.<br />
<div class="body-text -prose collapsible-text" data-full-text-url="/s/full-text/viewing:52259944/">
<br />
I mean, yeah, the plot doesn't really make much sense
if you give it any real thought, especially the mechanics behind it all, and there's a plot twist in regards to it that you can see coming from a mile away and that makes even less sense than the rest of it. Also, many of the scenes really felt like they could have gone much
further with the horror and gore than they do (although that clown scene
is legit terrifying), and the characters are constantly bringing up horror tropes and cliche's that they need to avoid doing if they want to survive (like, they mention that in almost every single scene) yet other than said characters mentioning it so much it really has no bearing on anything and rarely, if ever, even comes up in terms of payoff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1_nf7Ne5HA4/XALM4iE0peI/AAAAAAAAFZM/kwrO7NubcqQtGhWILl_r3c6B_tEVEHAYQCLcBGAs/s1600/277523929-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1_nf7Ne5HA4/XALM4iE0peI/AAAAAAAAFZM/kwrO7NubcqQtGhWILl_r3c6B_tEVEHAYQCLcBGAs/s400/277523929-4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Despite those issues though, overall, this is one really fun movie for
horror fans that never takes itself overly serious, and includes plenty of hilarious laugh-out-loud moments.<br />
<br />
We get masked
killers, an undead serial killer, zombies, vampires, killer clowns, a
Saw-inspired trap room, and much more. And all the scenes dealing with
that stuff is either quite horrific, pretty funny, or both. It also
helps that we actually care about <i>most</i> of these characters, even if the
lead played by Robbie Kay, from Once Upon a Time and Heroes Reborn, is
pretty one-note and boring as a lead. Zachery Levi from Chuck has a cameo as himself though and it is
glorious. I wish he would have been the main character because his two minutes of screen time (if even that) had more personality and range in it than the entirety of Robbie Kay's character. Which, to be clear, is not Robbie Kay's fault. I've seen him in several other things and he's always been fantastic, and he is fantastic here with what he's given to work with, it's just his character was written so bland that it really doesn't give him much to work with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WzF9zn48UNE/XALNngarlhI/AAAAAAAAFZU/toBD3ortISMD8Ilg01D-30U1MDumZykngCLcBGAs/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WzF9zn48UNE/XALNngarlhI/AAAAAAAAFZU/toBD3ortISMD8Ilg01D-30U1MDumZykngCLcBGAs/s400/maxresdefault.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sure, Blood Fest has issues, it's <i>far</i> from perfect. But
it still manages to be one hell of a fun hour and a half that flies by
before you know it, with plenty of fun horror set pieces to make any horror fan (die hard or casual) find at least something to enjoy.<br />

<b>REVIEW:</b> The Tremors franchise is one of my all-time favorite movie franchises, right behind Jurassic Park and Star Wars, and is easily my favorite B-Movie franchise. movies and previous characters - The town of Perfection shows up (albeit, only by showing us one single building that looks far more desolate and alone than it did in the previous movies) and that one building that shows up is Chang's Market, Jodi from Tremors 3 and the TV series gets mentioned, Burt's ex-wife from the original movie gets
mentioned, Burt himself is going through a kind of PTSD-sort of deal
(mixed with something biological) that directly relates back to something that
happened in Tremors 3, and Kevin Bacon's character, Valentine, from the original
movie, and the girl he ended up with, Rhonda, have a daughter and that
character is in this movie. I loved all that kind of fine attention to series continuity.<br />
<br />
In
addition, the new setting, the Canadian Arctic, was a visual breath of
fresh air for the series after all those desert-set locations. The
acting is good, the special effects are mostly great (save for a few
questionable shots) and the overall product still remains fun as hell.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OMFKpRQgKxA/W_A21F8mbXI/AAAAAAAAFX8/ipCrGd-ZGJwYjvn34pEYtfgrVeS_iLadACLcBGAs/s1600/vlcsnap-2018-04-30-22h05m30s272.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="408" data-original-width="720" height="226" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OMFKpRQgKxA/W_A21F8mbXI/AAAAAAAAFX8/ipCrGd-ZGJwYjvn34pEYtfgrVeS_iLadACLcBGAs/s400/vlcsnap-2018-04-30-22h05m30s272.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yet, I
still have a good handful of issues here. No Shriekers, <i>yet again</i>. Just
the Graboids and Assblasters forms, and with no real explanation given as to
why these are the African offshoot of the species from the last movie
and not the regular versions. In addition, the character of Kevin Bacon's daughter is
utterly wasted. She's not even the main female character and other than
a couple conversations she has with Burt, she does almost nothing but
stand around in the background. Why have this random background extra be
that legacy character and not actually have the main female in the movie be
her? It was such wasted potential.<br />
<br />
And speaking of cast members, this movie has one
of, if not <i>the</i> largest cast for any Tremors movie, yet there's hardly
any deaths in the movie and the rare few that we do get, minus one, are all
nameless background extras that we don't care about anyway. Lastly, the movie plays out way too
simple and straightforward. There are no twists, no surprises for the characters, no new
forms to shock them, no real suspense moments. It all plays out exactly as you expect,
with nothing to surprise you the viewer, or the characters, along the way. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HTddmNX-Yak/W_A3wd-3SJI/AAAAAAAAFYI/0N-NZH9JdzgzuqsxBNSDVMfXGzQ8vfNVwCLcBGAs/s1600/cold-day-in-hell-tremors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1000" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HTddmNX-Yak/W_A3wd-3SJI/AAAAAAAAFYI/0N-NZH9JdzgzuqsxBNSDVMfXGzQ8vfNVwCLcBGAs/s400/cold-day-in-hell-tremors.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Ultimately, the
movie is still lots of fun, don't get me wrong there. But it adds
nothing new to the series whatsoever, nothing new to the Graboid
mythology, hardly any death scenes, and it utterly wastes the potential
of having the child of an oldschool Tremors character. Jamie Kennedy is
still fun though, and actually less annoying than in the previous movie,
so people should be happy with that, and Michael Gross as Burt is <i>always</i> enjoyable to watch. The chase scenes are still a blast and the new location is a nice visual switch from the norm, so even though I have a ton of issues with this one, it still does just enough right to be an entertaining entry.<br />
<br />
I just hope they do a bit better with the next one.<br />

<b>Against the background of the D-Day invasion, a US military unit must rescue a brilliant British scientist, who is held captive by the most dangerous SS guards deep in enemy territory, however </b><b><span itemscope="" itemtype="http://schema.org/Movie">the mission turns ugly when the Allied soldiers battle with horrific experiments created by the Nazis.</span> </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>REVIEW:</b> Nazi Overlord is The Asylum's newest release, obviously mockbusting
(as they do so well) on the recent theatrical horror movie Overlord.<br />
<br />
<div class="body-text -prose collapsible-text" data-full-text-url="/s/full-text/viewing:51559814/">
The
first hour of this movie is a chore to get through. Some of the acting
is ok as far as Asylum's work goes but some of it is also downright
brutal, and nothing interesting really happens for that first hour
outside of a couple quick moments, which makes spending all that
meandering time with some of these actors all the worse. The first hour
could have easily been covered in a 20-30 minute time span and the
pacing would have felt much better for it, and it would have given us
more than a scant 20-odd minutes on the actual advertised horror-themed
plot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zU-aIpvoyUk/W_AmgOZO4OI/AAAAAAAAFWQ/DjnfF2YbzhcZZ_R9qmXKL16HPqplvngdgCLcBGAs/s1600/movie_nazi-overlord-2018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="718" data-original-width="1280" height="223" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zU-aIpvoyUk/W_AmgOZO4OI/AAAAAAAAFWQ/DjnfF2YbzhcZZ_R9qmXKL16HPqplvngdgCLcBGAs/s400/movie_nazi-overlord-2018.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Add to that, despite the cover art none of this movie takes
place in the dark or in a storm - it's all in bright sunny daylight,
which just utterly destroys any mood or atmosphere they would have had
built up. Even the enemy Nazis are not really all that threatening here.
Certainly not like in Asylum's other movie Nazi horror movie, <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2012/04/b-movie-review-nazis-at-center-of-earth.html">Nazis at the Center of the Earth</a>, where they were downright nightmare-inducing.<br />
<br />
When
the movie does finally get to the main plot as advertised...in the
final 20-odd minutes, that is... there are moments of fantastic gore,
however sadly the movie mostly consists of the characters tied to chairs
watching little mutant mosquitoes attack people behind a pane of glass and
the two lead scientists arguing back and forth. That's pretty much it.
The zombies play almost zero role in the movie except for a very quick
scene, and the experiments we do see are nowhere near as disturbing as
what we saw in Nazis at the Center of the Earth, not as disturbing as this very movie set them up to be. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L1bZfPk3iUw/W_AnxVbIFsI/AAAAAAAAFWc/gm1OlKbGjGQWN19yQfo5JfRfgmdKuHtEwCLcBGAs/s1600/HappyRoboto19476xKEuR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="356" data-original-width="640" height="222" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L1bZfPk3iUw/W_AnxVbIFsI/AAAAAAAAFWc/gm1OlKbGjGQWN19yQfo5JfRfgmdKuHtEwCLcBGAs/s400/HappyRoboto19476xKEuR.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In short, even
as an Asylum fan, Nazi Overlord was a pretty big disappointment. Especially
considering it was made by the guy that made <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/07/flight-666-2018.html">Flight 666</a>, which is one of
my favorite Asylum movies this year.<br />

<b>Jake Carter returns yet again and together with another former Marine, Luke Trapper, they must join forces to

<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> I actually enjoy all these low budget Direct-to-Video Marine sequels (Most more
than the original movie even), so I always like it when a new one suddenly gets
released out of nowhere like this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FaFmqFYp-HE/W-basxKd7lI/AAAAAAAAFTs/zK2Iq35m_zAhvUjj_lLIk01KLArXJcJNACLcBGAs/s1600/MV5BMzk0NDkwYjctODM4YS00YWUwLWI4NDEtYTVmMGM2MTJiM2Y1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjczMzc5NzQ%2540._V1_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FaFmqFYp-HE/W-basxKd7lI/AAAAAAAAFTs/zK2Iq35m_zAhvUjj_lLIk01KLArXJcJNACLcBGAs/s400/MV5BMzk0NDkwYjctODM4YS00YWUwLWI4NDEtYTVmMGM2MTJiM2Y1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjczMzc5NzQ%2540._V1_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sadly, The Marine 6: Close Quarters is easily the weakest of the bunch. It's directed by the same guy that directed the previous movie, The Marine 5: Battlefield, which <i>was </i>my least favorite until this one came around so at this point I think this director is just not suited for this series very well. It's not all on him though. The Miz
just looks bored during the entire thing and has no onscreen personality to
speak of, which is strange because he was fantastic in the previous three movies (even Battlefield). On top of that, the action and fight scenes feel quite sluggish
and very choreographed, whereas in the previous movies it flowed quite
well and most of it came across as pretty exciting action set pieces.<br />
<div class="body-text -prose collapsible-text" data-full-text-url="/s/full-text/viewing:51147479/">
<br />
Shawn
Michaels however, playing an old marine buddy of Miz's character, is the
main shining spot in this movie. His character is genuinely hilarious
on more than one occasion and he seemed like he was just all around
having a blast making this movie. If The Miz was going to pick this
movie to start being bored playing this role, I'm glad they at least had
someone else there to pick up his slack and give us <i>SOMEONE</i> enjoyable
to watch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sToJOWFKzjQ/W-bbn7pvngI/AAAAAAAAFT4/-KEQ8JgepJgGeedTBSAK0A2FTIoAp2lwgCLcBGAs/s1600/MV5BYTYxZGRlN2ItYjI5NC00YzI5LTlhNGUtOTc5YTQyMjRjZmQ3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjczMzc5NzQ%2540._V1_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sToJOWFKzjQ/W-bbn7pvngI/AAAAAAAAFT4/-KEQ8JgepJgGeedTBSAK0A2FTIoAp2lwgCLcBGAs/s400/MV5BYTYxZGRlN2ItYjI5NC00YzI5LTlhNGUtOTc5YTQyMjRjZmQ3XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjczMzc5NzQ%2540._V1_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was going to give this a lower score initially, but
there is actually one major plot twist I did not see coming at all and I
applaud them for having the balls to do it, so that bumped the movie up a point for me. Make no mistake though, even if you're a fan of the series like I am, The Marine 6: Close Quarters can be a bit difficult of an entry in the series to sit through.<br />

<b>Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked

<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> <span title="Edited">As a huge fan of the Halloween franchise since I first started getting into horror in the late 90s, I was looking
forward to this revival movie. Sure, I may find the Nightmare on Elm Street movies and Friday the 13th movies more '<i>fun'</i>, but Halloween was always my personal favorite horror franchise as a teen. I knew I wasn't going to be overly disappointed because, quite simply, even with a worst-case scenario there was no way it could
be as bad as some of the worst entries in the series previously (Halloween: Resurrection and Rob Zombie's Halloween II), and even those ones I managed to find <i>some </i>redeeming qualities.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wrw8425HVf8/W-bjVAQ56nI/AAAAAAAAFUw/EXcT0lYTiBEgjDhZ3VRom8h2A1VyMMlCACLcBGAs/s1600/Halloween-2018-Michael-Myers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="601" data-original-width="1068" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wrw8425HVf8/W-bjVAQ56nI/AAAAAAAAFUw/EXcT0lYTiBEgjDhZ3VRom8h2A1VyMMlCACLcBGAs/s400/Halloween-2018-Michael-Myers.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span title="Edited"></span> Luckily I loved the hell out of this. No, it's not perfect. I do have
a handful of issues with it, although only one is a major issue (and
it's a spoiler), the rest are just minor nitpicks (all the random
coincidences that just so happen to come together in unbelievable ways, a
couple things dealing with the very ending, and the fact that when it
comes to the Laurie/Michael reunion it seems like all the recognition
is solely from Laurie's side - Michael doesn't even seem to know who the
hell she is other than just some other random annoying potential
victim).<br />
<br />
But it does so so much right. The performances, the
music, the death scenes, Michael himself and his iconic mask (which some
of the sequels can't seem to get right). In addition the pace of the
movie is perfect, it never slows down into a boring lull nor does it
move by too fast that you can't register what's happening. This is also,
IMO, Jamie Lee Curtis' best performance in anything to date (the diner
scene, sitting outside the institution, the final showdown - all
goosebumps-inducing performances from her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y1J7bn52SFs/W-bj9eWzY0I/AAAAAAAAFU4/sPrDfL_BIB8vvyncH_Y6Es_IiUdIvirYACLcBGAs/s1600/httpsstatic2.srcdn_.comwordpresswp-contentuploads201810Jamie-Lee-Curtis-as-Laurie-Strode-in-Halloween-2018-Movie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="1400" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y1J7bn52SFs/W-bj9eWzY0I/AAAAAAAAFU4/sPrDfL_BIB8vvyncH_Y6Es_IiUdIvirYACLcBGAs/s400/httpsstatic2.srcdn_.comwordpresswp-contentuploads201810Jamie-Lee-Curtis-as-Laurie-Strode-in-Halloween-2018-Movie.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I do wish it had not
retconned all the sequels though, or at the very least included the
second movie. I think by removing the brother/sister aspect between Laurie and Michael
it also removed a bit of the 'oomf' from the whole affair and
especially the eventual confrontation between them, but like I said,
that's only a minor nitpick.<br />
<br />
As far as Halloween sequels go, this new one is damn near the top of the list.<br />

<span title="Edited"><b>REVIEW:</b> I have to admit that for the first 20 minutes or so
of Slender Man, I was honestly really digging it. It was shot great with some

<span title="Edited">But then the rest
of the movie happened and every single bit of that went out the window.
The acting got abysmal, as if the actors were reading off cue cards just
off the screen, nobody at all was likeable and it seemed like the
scriptwriter went out of his way to make these characters as unlikable
as possible, the dialogue they had to work with didn't even make sense
half the time, and all of the interesting visual shots and atmosphere
seemed to be left behind and exchanged for cheap laughable CGI jump
scares, none of which even worked or were effective anyway</span><br />

<b>The Scorpion King teams up with a female warrior named Tala, the daughter of The Nubian King. Together they search for a legendary relic
known as The Book of Souls, which will allow them to put an end to an
evil warlord with his own mythical artifact of power.</b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> The Scorpion King: Book of Souls is the fifth (!) in a long line of movies spun-off from the Brendan Frasier-starring Mummy franchise, and I know they get quite a lot of flak online but personally I love almost all of the Scorpion King direct-to-video sequels and it's one of my biggest guilty pleasure DtV franchises. Despite all its low budget faults, I find them pretty fun overall and I feel there's not nearly enough 'Sword and Sandal' adventure flicks nowadays.<br />
<br />
Victor Webster, who played the role in the last two movies, IMO is way
better and more natural in the role than the Rock was in the initial
theatrical movie. With that said, and Victor Webster aside, I didn't
like the previous movie, Quest for Power, very much at all, but I was still excited for
this one when I saw it was out now. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QAouoJd6SpU/W9HKCRs4yJI/AAAAAAAAFSs/Dm7HjhxqO9EtWvX4LuVvS_LRKvZRPugagCLcBGAs/s1600/tw4iYlxu0FIX4kmlFlprScdSfeA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QAouoJd6SpU/W9HKCRs4yJI/AAAAAAAAFSs/Dm7HjhxqO9EtWvX4LuVvS_LRKvZRPugagCLcBGAs/s400/tw4iYlxu0FIX4kmlFlprScdSfeA.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Zach McGowan takes over the title role this time and, even though I like McGowan overall in some of his other projects (Death Race: Beyond Anarchy and the amazing TV show Black Sails), I just don't think he was a good fit for this role at all. He's way too small and too scrawny compared to The Rock and Webster, and in addition I just found his portrayal to be very wooden, flat, and overall quite emotionless. There was just no fun factor to his portrayal of the character at all in this entry.<br />
<br />
With that out of the way though, almost everything else about this new sequel is great, if you're a fan of these (and if you're not, than you should know that by now, by Part 5 in a series, so why are you even wasting your time checking it out at this point?). The story is interesting and far more in line with what this franchise is about than The Quest for Power's story was, the action is well-done, and the movie <i>looks</i> gorgeous and like it has a bigger budget than it actually does. I would even venture to say this is probably the nicest-looking of all the sequels. It even has a nice connection to the original movie by having one of the main characters being the daughter of one of the main characters from the original movie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JoNmXTcvRJc/W9H8EayF-5I/AAAAAAAAFTQ/ZOuQnJ93Yr4VEcFXXEiiC6SdcNtEirlUACLcBGAs/s1600/798fa40954b120fb2697a20f3cb64274.th.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="148" data-original-width="350" height="168" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JoNmXTcvRJc/W9H8EayF-5I/AAAAAAAAFTQ/ZOuQnJ93Yr4VEcFXXEiiC6SdcNtEirlUACLcBGAs/s400/798fa40954b120fb2697a20f3cb64274.th.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Now, I said 'almost' everything else was great. Which implied that there are a few other things I take issue with. The top of which is the acting, especially from the villains side of things. Pretty much every villain is horrendous in the acting department, which really brings most of their scenes down. Also, the lead villain is supposed to be leading an army of Jackal-men created by the god Anubis (much like The Scorpion King character does in The Mummy Returns) however all these Jackal-men monsters look <i>nothing</i> like in The Mummy Returns and instead just look like regular people, which was a <i>huge</i> let down (Anubis himself looked awesome though, I must admit).<br />
<br />
Lastly, trying to figure out the timeline of all these movies is enough to give anyone a headache. We have the beginning of the story (Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior) and we have the ending of the story (The Mummy Returns), but everything in the middle is a bit of a disjointed muddled mess, with each movie seemingly dirtying the timeline even further and making an even bigger headache of the continuity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1ioJAnF4W1Q/W9HmFzKIjsI/AAAAAAAAFTE/_phT8HZGJHwVB5RL5V7OUdai9xPsYshCQCLcBGAs/s1600/AjuB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1ioJAnF4W1Q/W9HmFzKIjsI/AAAAAAAAFTE/_phT8HZGJHwVB5RL5V7OUdai9xPsYshCQCLcBGAs/s400/AjuB.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Most of my issues with this entry are only minor things that didn't hurt my overall enjoyment of the movie too much. However, Victor Webster's absence was horribly felt, especially since his replacement just doesn't do very good in the role, nor does he fit the role in any shape, way, or form. That is what hurt this movie for me the most. Still, I'll always be down for more Scorpion King movies, but I think next time they need to find a better replacement for Victor Webster if they can't get him himself to return, and I think it's about time they start showing us what we've been waiting five movies for - The Scorpion King's fall from grace that was alluded to in The Mummy Returns.<br />

<b>Two young friends find a magic book that brings an evil ventriloquist's dummy to life and they must stop him before he destroys their town. </b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> I had no faith in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween at all, based off the trailers and other reviews. And in some ways I was right.<br />
<br />
As
a sequel to the previous Goosebumps movie it’s not good at all. It’s
not even a sequel so much as a remake. Pretty much exact same story,
just with much more of a direct focus on Slappy the Dummy. Also, with Slappy being one
of the only actual Goosebumps monster to make an appearance in the movie
(most of the rest are brand new monsters created for this movie, The Haunted Mask is really the only other Goosebumps creation to play any role in this. There is the Werewolf and Yeti but they're only on screen for about 5 seconds) it
kinda raises the question as to why this movie even exists. It’s a
carbon copy of the first, but without all the actual Goosebumps
connections. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yPxDI6DFQZ0/W-b3VGOOwsI/AAAAAAAAFVQ/wn6cDZaaS206-ttgWoKmI8MXfICYYZmbwCLcBGAs/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1180" height="212" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yPxDI6DFQZ0/W-b3VGOOwsI/AAAAAAAAFVQ/wn6cDZaaS206-ttgWoKmI8MXfICYYZmbwCLcBGAs/s400/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<i>HOWEVER</i>.<br />
<br />
With that said, if there had been a
Goosebumps: Night of the Living Dummy movie, and this was a sequel to
that, it would make a bit more sense because, like I said above, there
is much more of a direct focus on Slappy himself this go-around and him
bringing an army of Halloween decorations to life to overrun the town
doesn’t even start happening until about 50 mins into the movie. Before
that it’s just Slappy himself causing mischief just like in the
Slappy-centric Goosebumps books. Also, this movie is surprisingly legit funny at times and I laughed out
loud one multiple occasions.<br />
<br />
In addition there’s also a couple genuinely creepy moments during it, again mostly dealing with Slappy, that I could certainly see getting creeped out by as a kid, and even though it annoyed me initially that most of the monsters in this are new creations not taken from the books, I have to admit that their designs were actually really awesome and I ended up loving most of them. That Pumpkin-headed monster was among my favorites, and I don't know if it was just me or not but the Witches reminded me pretty heavily of the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings, especially with their shrieking sounds.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tgRzwhnU3Es/W-b4IzpKRTI/AAAAAAAAFVY/mUK27O1xu_IyvXGFA4leDcl7gAOSXFm8ACLcBGAs/s1600/Screen-Shot-2018-07-11-at-8.17.22-AM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="702" data-original-width="1271" height="220" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tgRzwhnU3Es/W-b4IzpKRTI/AAAAAAAAFVY/mUK27O1xu_IyvXGFA4leDcl7gAOSXFm8ACLcBGAs/s400/Screen-Shot-2018-07-11-at-8.17.22-AM.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So
in short, as an actual sequel to the first movie I don’t like it very
much. But as its own stand alone movie based off the Goosebumps
property? I actually like it a lot, I just have to view it as a stand-alone Night of
the Living Dummy movie as opposed to a sequel to the first Goosebumps
movie. Sort of a brand new story set within the Slappy stories of
Goosebumps books, just told via movie form instead of as a book.<br />

<b>What is supposed to be a marriage boot camp on a remote island turns
into the ultimate test for survival when a 6-headed shark starts
attacking the beach. Trapped with minimal weapons they try to fight off
the shark, but quickly discover that no one is safe in the water or on
land. </b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> 6-Headed Shark Attack is the latest in a series made by The Asylum of multi-headed killer sharks. While I loved the first two movies in this series, <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2012/02/b-movie-review-2-headed-shark-attack.html">2-Headed Shark Attack</a> and <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2017/02/top-10-b-movies-of-2015.html">3-Headed Shark Attack</a>, the previous
movie, <a href="https://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2017/11/5-headed-shark-attack-2017.html">5-Headed Shark Attack</a>, I found was a big disappointment. It was
very...plain..., the characters were forgettable, and there was nothing interesting about it at all other
than the visual aesthetic of the shark having five heads. Luckily this new
one, 6-Headed Shark Attack, injects the fun that was missing from the
previous movie back into the franchise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YjnUvaj6ino/W8IsRzqKv5I/AAAAAAAAFRc/vE-ovxU8ZIg6YtBf_KHzn_t6a8VcYSzIwCLcBGAs/s1600/image-w1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YjnUvaj6ino/W8IsRzqKv5I/AAAAAAAAFRc/vE-ovxU8ZIg6YtBf_KHzn_t6a8VcYSzIwCLcBGAs/s400/image-w1280.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This one not
only brought back fun, inventive, shark attack and kill scenes but also
entertaining characters to spend the runtime with (even if not all of
them are acted well) as well as an engaging plot that wasn't just a
carbon copy of 99% of SyFy-made shark movies like 5-Headed Shark Attack
was, and said plot progressed at just the perfect pace. We also get some
visually-pleasing shots of and around the island, as well as some
unique locations that made for interesting visuals during some of the
scenes. It also helps that the CGI for the multi-headed shark actually
looks pretty damn good for an Asylum movie, minus a quick rough shot
here and there, the gore was fantastic, and it even had a surprisingly
great musical score.<br />
<br />
This one also includes some rather...um...unique... moments that you'll be hard-pressed to find in any other shark movie. Moments like the shark <i>walking</i> on land by using the multiple heads lining its sides almost like crab legs, or the characters, early-on, rejoicing over thinking they had the shark killed, only to find out they only destroyed one head out of six when it jumps back out of the water at them in an explosion of gore.<br />
<br />

I'm always saying that the top thing I look for in my SyFy and
Asylum-made B-Movies is the level of '<i>Fun</i>'. Above all else (acting, effects, script,
etc), Fun is what's most important to me in these types of
movies, and 6-Headed Shark Attack has that in spades. It's only an added bonus, the
cherry on top if you will, that some of that other stuff turned out
pretty good too.<br />

<b>A black ops reconnaissance team is sent to investigate the crash of an unidentified aircraft. When they arrive, they find strange markings and residue visible only in infrared. As the team gets deeper in and tries to figure out the source of the markings, they discover that they are being hunted by an alien expedition to Earth. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>REVIEW:</b> Alien Predator is Asylum's latest mockbuster, obviously cashing in on
the recent release of <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/09/review-predator-2018.html">The Predator</a>, although also acting just as much as a
mockbuster of the original Predator movie, which I have no problems with
at all as anybody who knows even a little about me knows that I love
Asylum movies. They're my bread and butter when it comes to low budget
direct-to-video B-Movies.<br />
<br />
With this one, an alien ship crashes in
the jungle and after the first team sent in to assess the situation
disappears, a second team goes in to find out what the hell is going on.
While the acting is about what you would expect from Asylum fare, the
characters themselves are actually pretty interesting and unique from
one another, enough so that even though they're all dressed the same and
wearing warpaint on their faces, they're still easy to distinguish from one another,
with a couple of them actually being downright likeable and enjoyable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1jmPOek4tr4/W66hw4OJ2vI/AAAAAAAAFPc/vYiwAKBeQV4JlsiWWoPOzL6y07hKVNrzQCLcBGAs/s1600/large-screenshot2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="714" data-original-width="1280" height="222" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1jmPOek4tr4/W66hw4OJ2vI/AAAAAAAAFPc/vYiwAKBeQV4JlsiWWoPOzL6y07hKVNrzQCLcBGAs/s400/large-screenshot2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My
big issue is that it takes a very long while into the movie (about half
an hour from the end) before we get to actually see the aliens, and
when we finally do get to see them they resemble something more like giant hulking
robots than actual aliens. Kind of a lackluster design, IMO. Add to
that, they lumber around so slowly that it's hard to really picture them
being as big of a threat as they're played up to be. However, the
effects themselves for them are done to campy low budget perfection by
way of man-in-suit practical effects, which I always appreciate, and there are a couple scenes where we do get to see them without their robotic helmets on, which I wish was how we got to see them in every scene as those designs were so much better and the prosthetics for them looked amazing.<br />
<br />
Luckily,
despite the aliens being off-screen for most of the movie, this movie
does actually have enough other interesting stuff going on during it
that helped keep my attention. Various situations that the soldiers find
themselves in, alien tech that they come across, mutilated bodies
strung up, that kind of stuff definitely went a long way in filling that
void left by having the aliens kept off-screen. Say what you will about
this movie, but at least it was never boring to me as there was almost
always something interesting happening every few minutes, with the small
downtime between those scenes being spent with mostly-enjoyable
characters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DmtFB2RQawQ/W66jRpQE-dI/AAAAAAAAFPo/hbwjGYMrej4zBUhjJJ2UOSrF8Uj6scaewCLcBGAs/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="168" data-original-width="300" height="224" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DmtFB2RQawQ/W66jRpQE-dI/AAAAAAAAFPo/hbwjGYMrej4zBUhjJJ2UOSrF8Uj6scaewCLcBGAs/s400/images.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As far as Asylum movies go, this one is slightly
above average. There are by far plenty of way better ones out there,
especially from early in this year alone. However, there are also plenty
plenty more that are painfully worse, and at the end of the day at least
Alien Predator is never dull or boring, despite whatever issues it does
have, and that, to me, is one of the most important things in a low
budget B-Movie.<br />

<br />
<b>It's been eight years since the opening night tragedy of Hell House, LLC
and still many unanswered questions remain. Thanks to an anonymous tip,
investigative journalist Jessica Fox is convinced that key evidence is
hidden inside the abandoned Abaddon Hotel - evidence that will shed light
on the hotel's mysteries. She assembles a team equally hungry for
answers with one goal: break into the hotel and discover the truth.</b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel was easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year. The first <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/09/review-hell-house-llc-2015.html">Hell House LLC</a> is one of my favorite found footage horror movies, possibly of all time. The level of fear, unease, and tension that movie portrayed was just unreal, so when I heard a sequel was coming this year it instantly moved to the top of my anticipation list.<br />
<br />
<i>Well.</i><br />
<br />
What a gigantic disappointment Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel turned out to be. This is right up there with The
Houses October Built 2: Hellbent as one of the most disappointing sequels to an
amazing first Found Footage movie that I've ever seen (and this coming from someone that <i>actually likes</i> Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RJniB6pjpw4/W64OtLJ0xWI/AAAAAAAAFOs/qXvqg_TAphIJ8bTBr1N282dKrMcPaGDFwCLcBGAs/s1600/Hell-House-LLC-II-Jessica-Fox-Jillian-Geurts-Shock-Still.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="1200" height="226" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RJniB6pjpw4/W64OtLJ0xWI/AAAAAAAAFOs/qXvqg_TAphIJ8bTBr1N282dKrMcPaGDFwCLcBGAs/s400/Hell-House-LLC-II-Jessica-Fox-Jillian-Geurts-Shock-Still.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It feels like the filmmaker forgot
or didn't realize what made the first movie so damn scary in the first
place. There is no subtlety to any of the scares in this one. Instead of
a mannequin turning its head just off camera or being moved around off
camera while the characters arn't focused on it, we instead see them full on stand up and walk around right in front of the camera. Instead of a
shadow moving in the background behind a character as they're talking we get a full figure just strolling on
by the camera like they're trying to recreate the Sasquatch from the Gimlin-Patterson film. Instead of hearing mysterious noises coming from another
room we see doors slamming open/shut on their own and objects moving
around the room in full force.<br />
<br />
There's nothing even resembling realism or subtlety
anywhere in this movie, and that just frustrated me more and more as the movie went on because the first movie did that kind of stuff <i>so damn well</i>. Sure, the rare moments that do genuinely
START to get a LITTLE creepy, and I start feeling at least a LITTLE bit of faith in what's about to happen... it then instead instantly cuts to footage
of a talk show (which itself takes up <i>half the damn movie</i>), ruining the flow and what
little bit of tension buildup they almost had.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zeFeWjzuLrU/W64Qfb-VznI/AAAAAAAAFO4/YNGkUQR1o2QNhsrFu__shQzGqNzKu9sWgCEwYBhgL/s1600/HH1-696x400.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="696" height="228" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zeFeWjzuLrU/W64Qfb-VznI/AAAAAAAAFO4/YNGkUQR1o2QNhsrFu__shQzGqNzKu9sWgCEwYBhgL/s400/HH1-696x400.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sure, there's nothing for the movie to even really build up towards anyway. The main
climax, if it can be called that, is simply a cartoony comic book
villain type character monologuing like a James Bond villain for 10+
minutes. <i>That's it.</i> A far cry from the total insane chaos of the climax of the first movie, that's for damn sure.<br />
<br />
It's also not helped that his acting, rather, <i>all</i> of the
acting in this really, is pretty atrocious. While the first movie was filled with likable characters that were acted well and everything felt natural, this movie is filled with unlikable characters, that are acted really bad, and everything about them, from their personalities to their dialogue, just feels forced.<br />
<br />
Even the much-expanded backstory and lore of the hotel and it's 'occupants' feels so much more forced this time around than in the first movie. Where the first movie felt like it could, almost, potentially, take place in the real world (if you believe in the supernatural), something that all good Found Footage movies do, this one just destroys that by going way too far into unrealism that it was impossible to wrap yourself up in the 'found' footage and really truly put yourself into these events.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JqpcXIchIPU/W64UuOvvDVI/AAAAAAAAFPE/3_o5a-wvA08WmKbkkVHl27pT-n7pgMV_ACLcBGAs/s1600/9n8orhxayWjUWGEm5Td19NyjbaI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JqpcXIchIPU/W64UuOvvDVI/AAAAAAAAFPE/3_o5a-wvA08WmKbkkVHl27pT-n7pgMV_ACLcBGAs/s400/9n8orhxayWjUWGEm5Td19NyjbaI.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I do honestly hate being so incredibly negative about something though, so I do want to list at least a couple things about it that I enjoyed before I end this off. The filming style and quality is actually improved over the first movie. It was never difficult to pick anything out and the entire thing looks gorgeous on a visual aesthetic level, and as mentioned above there were one or two moments where the movie felt like it could potentially start to portray some genuine tension, if it wasn't for the instant cutting to more talk show footage right at the wrong time.<br />
<br />
I'm sure there are people out there that love this movie, possibly
even more than they do the first one, and I'm glad for that. Nobody's
work should go unappreciated and I'm happy there are people out there
that love the hell out of Hell House LLC 2. Unfortunately, I'm not one
of them as not very much about this movie worked for me on any level. I do still hope we get a Hell House LLC 3 down the line, but I also hope that it's much more in line with the style and talent of the first movie than with this one.<br />

<b>REVIEW:</b> <span title="Edited">I know I'm in the minority, but Found Footage is
one of my personal favorite sub-genres of horror, and among those Hell House LLC is
easily one of my top favorite Found Footage horror movies of the last
few years.</span><br />

<br />
<span title="Edited">It's a bit of a slow burn at times, but in this case it uses
that slow burn wisely, letting us get to know and like the characters,
something that, in my opinion, is very important to a Found Footage movie. Plus that slow burn is not without its moments of fright scattered here and there
either. Some of my favorite creepy moments come during those parts of
the movie, like the moment with that tall clown mannequin turning its
head at the top of the basement stairs, and the whole strobe light test
run sequence in particular got to me like very few horror movies have in
a long time. And then when the shit hits in the fan in the final 20
minutes or so, it can get pretty batshit crazy and unsettling.</span><br />
<span title="Edited"></span><br />
<span title="Edited"><br />Unlike most horror movies, and especially Found Footage ones, Hell House LLC relies more on built-up atmosphere and little subtle scares that pack a huge punch, more-so than outright cheap jumpy moments just to illicit a reaction. This is the type of moment that swallows you in its atmosphere and you can't help but feel a growing sense of unease as the movie moves along. </span><br />

<br />
<span title="Edited">If I
have any complaint at all, it would be that the climax is a bit
difficult to pick out what exactly is happening during a lot of it, and I
feel like we miss a lot of important stuff during the crazy hectic
camera shots, movements, and low lighting during it. Which is a shame cause during the entire movie the climax event is built up as this huge terrible tragedy, which don't get me wrong it's still played up as that, except that it's so hard to pick out exactly what the hell is going on during it that you feel more lost than invested.<br /><br />As far as
Found Footage horror goes though, Hell House LLC is definitely right up there
with The Houses October Built as one of my favorites of the last few
years, if not of all time. It has a great story, a spooky backstory on
the abandoned hotel that it takes place in, well-acted characters that you actually
get to know and enjoy watching, and plenty of genuinely creepy, and even
downright scary, moments. Just don’t expect to have everything neatly
explained away by the time the credits roll, as this movie doesn't really supply many answers, but I don't feel such a thing is always necessary when it comes to Found Footage anyway. </span><br />

<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> I grew up watching the Predator movies (alongside the Alien movies and, later in life, the Alien vs Predator movies) and for the most part I've loved most of them. Even spent a large chunk of my teenage years reading all the novels and a fair number of the comics and graphic novels. I just can't get enough of these awesome intergalactic hunters, so it goes without saying I was pretty excited for a new movie from the get go. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9mea-EIps5M/W6o2QdMevlI/AAAAAAAAFNk/aIH5VZWrsOU373wM8_GGT917GYNmTPo-wCLcBGAs/s1600/the-predator-review-thumb-700xauto-201595.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="377" data-original-width="700" height="215" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9mea-EIps5M/W6o2QdMevlI/AAAAAAAAFNk/aIH5VZWrsOU373wM8_GGT917GYNmTPo-wCLcBGAs/s400/the-predator-review-thumb-700xauto-201595.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately I was no prepared for just how bad this movie was going to be. To start, I do not like any of these characters at all. Olivia Munn was ok for the most part, but I
hated literally everyone else, as they were too annoying to be likeable.<br />
<br />
For the first bit of the movie I was like ‘Ok, this isn't bad. Not
great but not horrible either.’ I had a few issues, mostly with the
pacing and the characters, but I was willing to chalk that up to all the problems with the the reshoots
and massive edits that plagued this production. Up until just after the Predator escapes from the
lab I was kind of enjoying it, and I do genuinely love that escape scene
and all the carnage that came with it. But the annoying as hell
characters just kept getting more annoying as hell by the minute, and as the movie
went on everything about it just got worse and worse.<br />
<br />
Sure, there's a scene where the little
kid <i>BLOWS SOMEONE UP</i> and they play it like a comedic moment. The kid
outright murders someone, and it's played as a joke. Then there's a scene where the one Predator uses a dead guy's hand to give a thumbs up, and
later on it motions with its finger for Munn to drop her gun. Like, what the hell did I even watch? I understand having some humor, it's present in all the Predator movies
to a degree, but this was more like a Saturday Night Live sketch or a
parody of the Predator movies than an actual official entry. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g-cMt_bnyKM/W6o3vSUamiI/AAAAAAAAFNw/aY-hmo5qE3wWqOl6DnJm8WlZGdwfIzEawCLcBGAs/s1600/the-predator-still-1070x481.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="482" data-original-width="1070" height="178" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g-cMt_bnyKM/W6o3vSUamiI/AAAAAAAAFNw/aY-hmo5qE3wWqOl6DnJm8WlZGdwfIzEawCLcBGAs/s400/the-predator-still-1070x481.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
They
should have left out a lot of the humor, most of it doesn’t work. They should have left
out the stupid as hell Super Predator as regular Predators are still just
fine and threatening and bad ass all on their own, they have not lost
their appeal. Remove those aspects and just have it be about this captured Predator escaping and trying to
get its gear back and get back to its ship, killing everyone in his way. It would have been a very similar movie, but way better in my opinion.<br />

<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> I enjoy all the Purge movies, so The First Purge was no different.
However, that's also part of the problem. After the <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-purge-2013.html">first</a> <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-purge-anarchy-2014.html">three</a> <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-purge-election-year-2016.html">movies</a>, when you have a prequel explaining the
beginnings of something, I tend to want a bit 'different' in there and
for the most part this one was the exact same as all the others, and it
doesn't really do anything different enough to warrant it being a
prequel. It doesn't really explore anything that the other movies didn't
explore, and it doesn't really show us anything that we havn't already
seen done in the other movies.<br />
<br />
Also, the final 15 minutes or so is just a
by-the-numbers boringly-shot shoot-out in an apartment complex between
our main characters and a Government task force. Nothing to write home
about and nothing that really holds your attention much either. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t6SVCUUuQTw/W6TcF6hTBSI/AAAAAAAAFNA/swbq89HDdm8EXdCFAYbCAIrqty5SFocGACLcBGAs/s1600/gn-gift_guide_variable_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="970" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t6SVCUUuQTw/W6TcF6hTBSI/AAAAAAAAFNA/swbq89HDdm8EXdCFAYbCAIrqty5SFocGACLcBGAs/s400/gn-gift_guide_variable_c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily there's still a lot of fun stuff here for fans
of this franchise. While the climax is boring and forgettable, there's a
lot of fun, good, Purging-related scenes throughout the movie leading
up to that, with a couple of genuinely intense moments as well (the Purge Party scene is one of my favorites). Also, most
of the characters are pretty good, with the drug kingpin guy being one
of the most likable and memorable characters in the entire franchise.<br />
<br />
There's also a neat spin of the New Founding Fathers of America recording the events of the night so that the media can play footage of it out on the News. It didn't really impact anything major in the movie, but it was something at least a tiny bit different from the other movies, and I enjoyed that aspect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tp7wgfaGM0k/W6TdH_0MQPI/AAAAAAAAFNM/OA4bmiatB1sQ6CMD-AG4kaE8RUBDCW4tACLcBGAs/s1600/thefirstpurgepic1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="725" data-original-width="1086" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tp7wgfaGM0k/W6TdH_0MQPI/AAAAAAAAFNM/OA4bmiatB1sQ6CMD-AG4kaE8RUBDCW4tACLcBGAs/s400/thefirstpurgepic1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
While
there's not really enough in this prequel to warrant its existence <i>as</i> a
prequel, and there's nothing that really makes it stand out, or even
match, the previous Purge movies (or the so-far pretty great new TV
show), it's still a decent enough watch for fans of the franchise like
myself, although at this point, if they're going to keep making these
than they need to start bringing something new to the table, and explore
some stuff we haven't seen in these movies before.<br />

<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> Megalodon is Asylum's latest mockbuster, made to cash in on the
success of the big budget theatrical <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2018/09/review-meg-2018.html">The Meg</a>, as they always so expertly
do. This actually isn't the first Megalodon-themed movie that The
Asylum has released; They've already got an unrelated series of four
movies dealing with the title creature battling various different other
giant monsters in each one - <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2011/03/asylum-movie-review-mega-shark-vs-giant.html">Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus</a>, <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2011/03/asylum-movie-review-mega-shark-vs.html">Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus</a>, <a href="http://bmovieshelf.blogspot.com/2014/02/mega-shark-vs-mecha-shark-2014.html">Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark</a>, and Mega Shark vs Kolossus.<br />
<br />
<div class="body-text -prose collapsible-text" data-full-text-url="/s/full-text/viewing:48000887/">
The
first thing I noticed is that while some of the CGI here is atrociously
bad, even by Asylum's very low standards, some of it is also quite
impressive. The Megalodon shark itself looking quite good and far better
than their design of it used for the Mega Shark movies, with far more
detail added to it as well. Pretty much any scene with the Megalodon on
full display was entertaining to watch, especially during the final 20
minutes or so when it finally comes up to the surface.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JX5V6VEVSig/W5ufkMwusqI/AAAAAAAAFMg/QpVCxnU5pmAgFnQE3NJyOeOsd_PfPZXUACLcBGAs/s1600/2018-shark-2-678x381.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="381" data-original-width="678" height="223" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JX5V6VEVSig/W5ufkMwusqI/AAAAAAAAFMg/QpVCxnU5pmAgFnQE3NJyOeOsd_PfPZXUACLcBGAs/s400/2018-shark-2-678x381.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately,
there's surprisingly not a lot of those types of scenes, and I didn't
like very much else about this one. There really is far too much time
spent on human villains and human drama between cardboard characters we
don't care about, played by actors that are just not engaging or very
good in the roles. Also, the movie takes itself way too seriously. I
love Asylum movies best when they're fun and cheesy, but there's not
much fun to be found with this one, outside of a few small scenes,
mostly in the last chunk of the movie, which makes the stretches of
boring human drama between the shark action feel even more painful.<br />
<br />
Asylum
movies are usually a fun time, despite their horribly low low budgets.
This year in particular has been a mostly-fantastic run for them with
their titles. However, this one was mostly dull, boring, took itself too
seriously, and didn't give us quite enough engaging giant killer shark
action to make up for any of it. They actually throw in some random
shots of it just swimming around, in between other scenes that has
nothing to do with it, just to make it feel like its actually in the
movie more than it is.<br />
<br />
Like always, their poster art is pretty damn rad though. I'd love to have a full-sized poster of that on my wall.<br />

<b>A deep-sea submersible has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to
be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in
the Pacific. Expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited to save the crew from this unstoppable threat: a prehistoric 75-foot-long shark
known as the Megalodon.</b><br />
<br />
<b>REVIEW:</b> While I'm not a fan of Steve Alten's later 'Meg' novels, I do really
love his first two, the first of which this movie is based upon. As an
adaptation of a book, The Meg movie is terrible. Other than the very
basic idea of a giant prehistoric Megalodon shark being discovered in
modern times and wrecking havoc on the surface, and a few character
names (even though their personalities are totally different), the movie
pretty much has nothing in common with the book at all. I would actually venture to say The Lost World: Jurassic Park has more in common with its book counterpart than this movie does, and anyone familiar with that movie and it's book knows there's very little in common, so that's saying something.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bdODPaByiU8/W5mdThMzWnI/AAAAAAAAFKI/Z1YbphxaNC4lK8C9MLGHSHUwdzX1s3LVACLcBGAs/s1600/shark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="800" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bdODPaByiU8/W5mdThMzWnI/AAAAAAAAFKI/Z1YbphxaNC4lK8C9MLGHSHUwdzX1s3LVACLcBGAs/s400/shark.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
However,
as a stand alone movie in its own right, The Meg is kind of fun. Nowhere near
great, and nothing that's worth revisiting after your initial first
watch, but still enjoyable enough for that first watch.<br />
<br />
The acting is
pretty wooden and bad, except from the little girl who actually does
a pretty decent job and has some of the best lines in the movie. Even
Jason Statham is pretty forgettable in this as he just didn't fit the
role at all and really doesn't have much to do other than jumping into the water to swim frantically or jump into a submersible to pilot it frantically. In addition, the tone of the movie is all over the place and definitely reeks of studio interference. There'll be some moments that are quite dark and going for an almost creepy-type vibe, but then other moments (as in, the majority) are these light, fluffy, comedic and campy moments, the likes of which you'd see in any of SyFy's original movie of the week creature features such as their Sharknado movies.<br />
<br />
The special effects are mostly great though,
although there are a couple scenes where they felt far below the rest of
the movie (the scene with the shark jumping over the ship comes to
mind), and most of the action scenes and attack scenes involving the
shark are quite fun, although sadly there's not as much of that as you
would expect. Luckily the last 20 minutes or so tries really hard to
make up for that in utter killer shark action insanity, and it mostly
works. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bqSAkpucdhg/W5measFB8hI/AAAAAAAAFKU/B4BXni-TN18jkfTPEHvlFUDimC1t6gt0gCLcBGAs/s1600/the-meg-still-1-1160x480.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="1160" height="165" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bqSAkpucdhg/W5measFB8hI/AAAAAAAAFKU/B4BXni-TN18jkfTPEHvlFUDimC1t6gt0gCLcBGAs/s400/the-meg-still-1-1160x480.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In the end, the final overall product does feel like a bit
of an uneven mess, with a lot of aspects just not working or meshing
together like they should. However, when something does work the movie
is a fun time waster that, while you won't remember much about it after
the fact, it holds your interest enough while watching.<br />

<br />
I miss the late 90s and early 2000s when creature feature movies would go theatrical quite often. Movies such as Lake Placid, Anaconda, Deep Blue Sea, and 8-Legged Freaks come to mind right away. Even though The Meg may not be the greatest creature feature movie out there, I'm thrilled that it did so great at the box office, because I'm hoping that maybe that'll pave the way for more of these types of movies to go to theaters as opposed to direct to video and VOD like they've been doing. If a so-so entry like The Meg can do so powerful at the box office, than an actual amazing creature feature, like 2015's comedic Stung or 2014's more serious Backcountry, as two examples that come instantly to mind, should be able to do even better, especially with a larger budget behind them such as this movie had.<br />
